Project Introduction
The Town of Nantucket commissioned The Maguire Group to perform a feasibility study for the construction of a new Public Safety Facility at 2 Fairgrounds Road. The proposed facility will consolidate both the Police and Fire Departments to the Southeast corner of the site bounded by Fairgrounds Road and Ticcoma Road.

Nantucket Island has a current year round population of approximately 10,000 which escalates to over 60,000 residents during the summer months. Consequently, both the Police and Fire Department staff up to accommodate this influx of residents. The new facility is required because the existing facilities currently used by the Police and Fire Departments are severely deficient and inadequate. This is true for the off-season months and especially so during the tourists season. Most facilities required for even the basic Police and Fire operations are virtually non-existent or severely undersized.

The operational effectiveness, efficiency, and capabilities of both departments will be greatly enhanced by having an updated dedicated building that conforms to current standards.

Since that time, the Town of Nantucket hired Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc. of Foxborough, MA, to provide the design of a new Public Safety Facility. A revised master plan recommends relocating the facility within the site to be closer the existing Town facility, which on October 10, 2007, was approved by the Board of Selectmen.
